According to the Health Library of CNN you have to wait 6 months, but after that, you can!

Answer by Karen R
no, not until the mono it out of your system

Answer by Sam
You would have to make sure that you were not in the active phase anymore. So you would need to take a blood test for EBV IgM and IgG to make sure that you no longer had any IgM (an indicator of activity). Someone else said 6 months, but it is possible you could still be in the active phase for more than 6 months so a blood test would need to be done to confirm you’re in the convalescent phase. As long as you have no IgM you should be fine to give blood.
Good luck!

Is it safe for me to exercise in my garage?

Sponsored Links

I have a treadmill and a weightlifting set in my garage.
I love running on the treadmill and strength training, and I often do it for long periods of time.

The only problem is it safe for me to be huffing and puffing in there, breathing in all that air? Am I in danger of carbon monoxide poisoning, asbestos, or increasing my chances of getting lung cancer?

Every day, the car goes out of my garage in the morning, and returns in the evening. Other than that, the garage door stays shut the whole day.

Answer by nnatindahat
I guess it depends on what is in your garage that could be potentially harmful. If you have a lot of chemicals in there, then i suppose its not good to be breathing it all in all day. Asbestos as far as i know is only dangerous when it is broken etc. this means the fibers of the material is in the air. If you have this in the garage and its crumbling and fibers are in the air its dangerous at any time. If its just sheets (for walls) its generally safe.
The body needs regular air to function well anyways so i would try to open the door to work out, or a window maybe.

Answer by dmlm
You should be okay. No worse than being outside. Just open the door to let air in.

Humans with wings or other things?

Sponsored Links

I need to put together a beginning-to-end case study on a pathology for a radiology class. I’m looking for ideas on what pathology to use. Mesothelioma would be an example of an overused topic. I’d like to do something rare and a bit bizarre, something visually captivating. Like a human who’s grown wings, for example. Any suggestions?
Black Hairy Tongue Syndrome certainly is odd enough to suit me. But I don’t think x-rays would be involved. The webbed fingers and toes is closer, but still not exactly what I’m looking for. Polydactylism (extra fingers or toes) would be perfect, but I’m pretty sure a couple of my classmates are doing that one. Keep suggestions coming though! Thanks!!

Answer by rosie recipe
Not quite wings, but there is a rare condition, where the fingers and toes are “webbed”

This might be the first step to human flight as it would make gliding easier – like flying squirrels do. they don’t fly, they glide after lurching off a branch

Answer by jill48
There is a real disorder called “Black Hairy Tongue Syndrome”. Check it out.

Answer by skpicky
How about syndactaly? But that’s genetic. When you say pathology, that would indicate a disease process rather than something genetic, is that right?

Answer by lady_lovinlife
There are several to choose from. How about Vader’s syndrome and the multi system dysfunction associated or Spina Bifida and it’s various degrees. Wagner’s Granulocytosis, very interesting x rays! Sarcoidosis, another very interesting disease process with x ray as a primary diagnostic tool. Heck even TB, as prevalent as it is becoming in this country, it would be a terrific tool to take with you.
Good luck it sounds like a fun project… Darn I miss school!

Asbestos exposure at workplace?

Sponsored Links

I’d like to know what i could do to help prevent getting mesothelioma or any other illneses that could follow.
yea i was exposed, and want to know what i can do to lower the chances of it.

Answer by L S
Workers should use all protective equipment provided by their employers and follow recommended work practices and safety procedures. For example, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)-approved respirators that fit properly should be worn by workers when required.

Workers who are concerned about asbestos exposure in the workplace should discuss the situation with other employees, their employee health and safety representative, and their employers.

There’s more info in the source. Good luck.

I would like to find public court files and I don’t have a docket number. what can I do?

Sponsored Links

This case has to do with my dad who is now deceased and the papers do not appear under his name. My brother is the Executor of my father’s will and doesn’t want to give the information and right now he is nowhere to be found. I will llike to know if there is any way of finding this information this could be in NJ court, already call the court and they can’t find it. They are telling me a need a docket number which I don’t have or the lawyers do not want to provide. This has to do a with mesothelioma case.
Is there any coding for these cases and where can I find this info. The lawyers for this case are telling me they can’t give me any info because I’m not the Executor in the case. Please help. If anyone knows who should I contact that could help. I have no money to hire a lawyer. If this is in the cour’ts public record do I have the right to have them? Are the lawyers for this case telling me the truth?

Answer by Pascha
It sounds like you’re getting stonewalled. There are certain things that are public information. Go personally to the division of the court that handles wills and probate and ask to see the file with your dad’s will in it. Don’t tell them who you are or why you want to see it. Some courts even have information about court cases on the internet. Go to the site for your county and see what you can find there. If nothing works, do what reporters do when they can’t get information. Use the freedom of information act. If any court only indexes cases only by docket number and not by name, it would be a very inefficient court.

Is there a good or safe way to remove asbestos that insulates pipes leading from your boiler / heater?

Sponsored Links

I know you have to have a company in hazmat suits come out and they seal the area off and work with a machine that draws in the air and fibers, but isn’t there still some residue in the air and on things that can be dangerous? I’m worried I should sell the house and not live here myself during or after the renovation. I’m worried about mesothelioma… lung cancer from inhaling bits of asbestos. So far, I’ve just not touched the asbestos… hoping not stirring it up would be safer, but now I have problems with my boiler and will have to have it replaced, which means dealing with the asbestos problem. sigh.

Answer by talon699
When the team is finished the air is checked , and if there is residual amounts they continue until it is safe and clear. That is what they do and there are no better people to do it. You could never even come close to what they do.

Answer by donna d
the company reasures you there will not be any spores left in the air to harm you why don’t you call the hazmat company and talk to them and let them ease your mind millions of people have gotton this done.go easy on yourself and if you deside to sell your house so be it.

Answer by N L
Listen to Talon. Trust the experts, and follow their recommendations. They know what they’re doing and won’t allow anything to happen which would endanger you in any way. Just make sure whoever you hire to do the work is fully licensed AND trained.

Answer by unchainmenow
Asbestos is a problem when it is “disturbed”. If you don’t mess with it, and if it is not flaculant, that is fluffy and falling apart, then it isn’t a danger.
The guys who remove it wet it so it doesn’t get airborne.
Asbestos is dangerous but not that dangerous.

Answer by This Old House
Asbestos is nasty, nasty stuff if it gets airborne, so this is definitely not a material you want to take chances with. Your mitigation contractor can advise you as to whether or not you should find other lodging while the work goes on. Here’s what you need to know about asbestos and asbestos cleanup:

Asbestos abatements were sometimes necessary on old job,
usually in healthcare facilities.
The contractors have the equipment/ materials to remove asbestos debris & protect the surrounding areas during normal hours .
Licensed abatement contractors test the enviornment before & after work is done & certify the area is safe.
The contractor will advise if it is best to vacate the property
(or not ) while work is in progress.
If there is extensive asbestos wrapping on piping ,the contractor may be able to re- encapsulate it if that is a good option.
Could get lucky, some older homes had pipes insulated with glass fiber that was wrapped the same old way they did the asbestos.
Might also check local regs to see if the home can be sold “as is ”
or if you must perform an abatement as a condition of sale.
It needs to be a co-ordinated effort between the heating contractor & the abatement contractor to prepare for the new furnace since the heating contractor will not be able to start work until the place has been certified “safe”.
Might be disruptive , but a reputable licensed plumber & certified abatement contractor can do the job safely.
Best regards

Answer by scobranchi
As long as you use a reputable company to remove the asbestos, you shouldn’t have a concern. If it’s done right, the area will be sealed off and final clean-up will remove any remaining dust.

I know asbestos has a bad reputation and it should be removed when there’s a chance for exposure when it’s free in the air from damaged pipes, etc., but it’s not like it’s plutonium or uranium where any exposure will mean certain death. I’m not trying to trivialize your concerns but I don’t think you should be concerned if the clean-up is done properly. Lastly, I would expect a final inspection and testing should be part of the clean-up which will also hopefully alleviate your concerns.
